HOOP WORLD VOL. 1

"An orange circle where it doesn't belong."
This is not just a collection of photographs, it is an exploration of the unexpected. It is an obsession, focusing solely on one subject matter over and over again to see how far it can be taken. It is an attempt to put an object into places it has never been before, blurring the lines between reality and fantasy.
Conceptualized and shot from 2020 - 2023, Hoop World Vol. 1. is the debut collection from Brooklyn, NY based multimedia artist, Douglas McCurdy.
Over 40,000 miles were traveled in the creation of this collection including locations such as Joshua Tree, Central Park, Australia and the tallest sand dunes in North America located in Southern Colorado.
All hoops were either found in the wild or physically placed by Douglas using zip ties, magnets, tape or thrown in the air.

Now Yours

“Familiar, yet oddly different” - Now Yours reimagines iconic locations and scenes across New York City, inviting VIEWERS TO BRING A PIECE OF NEW YORK INTO THEIR HOME. THE ONGOING SERIES BY DOUGLAS MCCURDY PLAYS WITH CONVENTIONAL AND ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY, MAKING EACH LOCATION SOMEWHAT RECOGNIZABLE, BUT WITH A NEW PERSPECTIVE. ‘NOW YOURS’ REFLECTS A PERSONAL CONNECTION— TRANSFORMING THE ARTIST'S VISION INTO SOMETHING THAT CAN BE EXPERIENCED IN ANY SPACE.

Questions

Diving deeper into abstraction, "Questions" is the newest series from Douglas McCurdy. This mixed media, abstract digital collage series marks a shift from creating and capturing moments to creating art out of daily life. Inspired by the colors and textures of the streets of New York, Douglas finds beauty in ripped stickers, scraped paint, half-destroyed advertising posters, discarded trash and more. Blending and layering these elements, he creates unique compositions that express the subconscious. Each decision, each left or right turn in his day becomes part of the art piece, answering what the world presents to him. "Questions" is a testament to finding art in what everyday life presents.
